The ESO Slice Project ( ESP ) galaxy redshift survey ?
The ESO Slice Project (ESP) is a galaxy redshift survey we have recently completed as an ESOKey-Project over about 23 square degrees, in a region near the South Galactic Pole. The survey is nearly complete to the limiting magnitude bJ = 19.4 and consists of 3342 galaxies with reliable redshift determination. TheESP survey is intermediate between shallow, wide angle samples and very deep, one-dim...
متن کاملThe ESO slice project (ESP) galaxy redshift survey VI. Groups of galaxies
In this paper we identify objectively and analyze groups of galaxies in the recently completed ESP survey (2323 ≤ α1950 ≤ 01 20 and 2230 ≤ α1950 ≤ 2252; −4045 ≤ δ1950 ≤ −39 45). We find 231 groups above the number overdensity threshold δρ/ρ =80 in the redshift range 5000 km s ≤ cz ≤ 60000 km s . These groups contain 1250 members, 40.5 % of the 3085 ESP galaxies within the same cz range. The med...
متن کاملComment on the paper “The ESO Slice Project galaxy redshift survey: V. Evidence for a D=3 sample dimensionality”
In a recent analysis of number counts in the ESP survey Scaramella et al. (1998) claim to find evidence for a crossover to homogeneity at large scales, and against a fractal behaviour with dimension D ≈ 2. In this comment we note firstly that, if such a cross-over exists as described by the authors, the scale characterizing it is ∼ 100÷300h−1Mpc. This invalidates the “standard” analysis of the ...
متن کاملThe Deep 2 Galaxy Redshift Survey : the Galaxy Luminosity Function to Z ∼
The evolution of the B-band galaxy luminosity function is measured using a sample of more than 11,000 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from the DEEP2 Redshift Survey. The rest-frame MB versus U−B color-magnitude diagram of DEEP2 galaxies shows that the color-magnitude bimodality seen in galaxies locally is still present at redshifts z > 1. Dividing the sample at the trough of this color bi...
